Sri Lanka will surrender two Indian detainees, who have been serving life detainment in the island country, to India on Wednesday and Thursday under the SAARC detainees trade understanding, a senior jail official said here.
Jail Spokesman Chandana Ekanayake let PTI know that the extra Secretary to the service of equity has informed the official general of penitentiaries to deliver the two Indian nationals.
They will be given over to the Indian police authorities at the Colombo worldwide air terminal today (Wednesday) and tomorrow (Thursday), he said without recognizing the two Indians to ensure their protection.
One of the convicts serving life detainment has been in prison for north of 12 years for ownership and Import of opiates and charged under the Poisons, Opium And Dangerous Drugs (Amendment) Act, Ekanayake said.
The second, charged under the Dangerous Drugs Act, is serving in a prison here throughout the most recent 6 years.
The India-Sri Lanka two-sided settlement on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons was endorsed in June 2010, making ready for the exchange of detainees to correctional facilities in their nation of origin.
The understanding accommodates the conditions under which such exchanges can occur and the different commitments of the moving State and the getting State.
