Mandating at least six airbags in vehicles with up to eight passengers: Gadkari

The Center will make it obligatory for carmakers to give at least six airbags in engine vehicles that can convey up to 8 travelers for improved security of inhabitants, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Friday.

In a progression of tweets, the Road Transport and Highways Minister said his service had effectively ordered the execution of fitment of the driver airbag with impact from July 1, 2019 and front co-traveler airbag with impact from January 1, 2022.

"To improve the wellbeing of the inhabitants in engine vehicles conveying upto 8 travelers, I have now supported a Draft GSR Notification to make at least 6 Airbags mandatory," Gadkari said.

GSR here represents General Statutory Rules.

He further said that to limit the effect of front facing and parallel crashes on the inhabitants situated in both front and back compartments, it has been concluded that 4 extra airbags be ordered in the M1 vehicle classification.

" ...i.e two side/side middle airbags and two side drapery/tube airbags covering every detachable traveler. This is an essential advance to make engine vehicles in India more secure than any time in recent memory," he said.

As indicated by Gadkari, this will at last guarantee the wellbeing of travelers across all sections, regardless of the expense/variation of the vehicle.
