JNU Vice Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar, whose residency was defaced by debates, has been selected as Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC).
As indicated by the Ministry of Education, Kumar has been selected as the director of the advanced education controller for a time of five years.
"The Central government has named M Jagadesh Kumar as UGC Chairman for a time of five years or till he achieves the age of 65 years, whichever is the earliest," a senior MoE official said.
The post of the UGC administrator fell empty on December 7 after Prof D P Singh, who had assumed responsibility in 2018, surrendered after turning 65. The post of the bad habit executive of the advanced education controller is likewise empty.
Kumar is at present holding the charge as acting VC of the varsity after his long term terminated a year ago. The Ministry is yet to choose his replacement at JNU.
From the rebellion column of 2016 and lockdown of his office on numerous occasions to then HRD Minister stalling out for more than six hours at the scene of JNU's conference in 2019, Kumar's residency as the Vice-Chancellor of the college has been defaced by debates.
Kumar, who was made the Vice Chancellor in January 2016, had his first brush with discussion as the VC simply seven days after his arrangement when understudies clashed with the organization over holding of an occasion against the hanging of Parliament assault convict Afzal Guru.
Broadly respected for his insight in electronic designing and related regions, Kumar acquired MS(EE) and PhD (EE) degrees from the Dept of Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras.
He has recently functioned as Assistant educator at IIT Kharagpur and Associate Professor at IIT Delhi.
